Fundamentals of product photography

The images on your product pages are there to highlight the value and benefits of your products. When your clients visit your online shop, they can't touch your products. The pictures you provide are the only elements your clients will be able to visually relate to when making their choice.

It’s now a question of photographing your products intelligently to facilitate their discovery by your clients. The objective is to show as many details as possible about your products that you feel are relevant to your target audience, and this with the best quality photos possible.

Prefer natural light

This is a basic principle: generally speaking, you’ll get the best results by taking your photos in daylight. If it’s impossible for you to use natural light, you can of course use artificial lighting, but pay attention to some details.

The smaller the light source, the deeper the shadows. If the light source is smaller than your product, you’ll get pronounced shadows.  So prefer diffused and dominant light sources, which are better distributed around the product. A little tip: if you use a flash, use a flash diffuser that will prevent the shadows from polluting your photos too much. To do this, you can stick tape or plastic film on the flash of your camera.

Use a white background

Photographing your products on a white background allows you to focus your clients' attention on the product itself. In addition, the white background gives a clean look to your product page, and also a uniformity to your product list.

Take pictures from multiple angles

The best way to present your product in detail is to photograph it from different angles. This will allow you to present a complete picture that will help your clients visualize themselves with your product.

Also think about close-up photos that will also help your clients appreciate every detail of your product.

Finally, think of presenting photographs in different contexts, to help your clients get a clear idea of your product, its size, etc.
